Pillar 1. Nutrition – Using Intelligent Bacteria to Help You Reduce Stress, Increase Energy, Increase Satiety, Balance Moods And Burn Fat.
The “Calories in v Calories out” method of weight loss and healthy eating is out. Nutrient density is the holy grail of anti-ageing and long-term health and well being. You either get on board, or you’re out of date.
Nutrient density implies that the amount of nutrients a food has will keep you satisfied, help you sleep deeply, reduce food related inflammation and keep fat off for longer. Your bowel movements should be frequent and pass easily and therefore your weight and fat reduces each day. This is because as you feed the healthy bacteria in your gut, they multiply in numbers, help with digestion which means you use less energy on digestion, and among other things influence the food you crave!
How important are these live organisms inside us? For every one signal the brain sends to the gut, the gut sends nine signals back. The gut has such a strong influence on the brain and some scientists believe that the gut is actually more important than the brain. It also houses about 80% of our immune system.
Foods that are energy dense such as a bag of lollies, packet of chips or block of sugary chocolate are very low in nutrient density and addictive in nature and do not satisfy you at all. They keep you coming back until you eat the entire packet or feel sick! These foods also tell your intelligent “bad” gut bacteria to STORE more calories and so your weight increases quickly.
My point is this –
the food you eat either tells your body to store fat or burn it, depending on which gut bacteria is dominant.
Feed the good bacteria with nutrient dense foods and you’ll never go hungry and maintain a healthy body shape. This is because as I mentioned earlier the good bacteria will influence your healthy food craving.
Sounds easy right? Well yes, but life as you know it tends to get a bit stressful and stress actually kills the good bacteria in your gut! When we are upset, anxious, angry, busy, or overtired these feelings can cause us to crave coffee, alcohol, sugar, salt and fatty foods to “support” this ongoing stressful life. This is your built in biological response to stress. Your gut actually tells your body to eat more convenient food ready for the “famine or fight” your body perceives is about to take place.
If your body thinks there is a shortage of food it will store fat very quickly and will be extremely slow in releasing that stored fat because it needs the quick burning visceral fat on hand to keep the organs working during the “famine”.
If your body thinks you are in fight mode, your stress hormone will stimulate your liver to release sugar into the blood stream to give your big powerful muscles the energy they need to keep you safe by fighting or running away. The problem with this scenario is that if the elevated blood sugar is not burned as energy, it gets stored as fat.
These are two very common examples of how we get stubborn and uncontrollable fat gain when we live under constant pressure. This is called survival mode.
When you are in survival mode, your belly fat actually produces stress hormones that make you crave salt, sugar and fat which of course leads to more fat gain….so you can see why its important to identify and deal with the root cause of your stress to get off the dieting merry-go-round and release stubborn bodyfat.
Sometimes as a coach I have to dig a little deeper with members to find out what is “keeping them awake at night”. Once they understand how their personal situation is affecting the way they eat and subsequently their mental health and physical bodyshape, they are better equipped to overcome survival mode and return to “rest and digest mode” using natural therapies.
Pillar 2. Exercise – High Intensity Interval Training Is Great…..As Long As It’s For The Right Person.
A one size fits all approach to training is also a major problem. Most trainers just get on the wagon with what everyone else seems to be doing. “Just thrash them – that’s a good workout….”
But actually, it isn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, high intensity training is great…..but not for people who are highly stressed or people that have muscular asymmetries (or imbalances). Highly stressed people don’t recover well, because they don’t necessarily sleep well. High intensity training increases stress so this type of exercise approach can simply run a stressed person into the ground and burn them out.
Someone who has muscular asymmetries is more prone to injury due to “movement incompetency” – this means that their movement is unbalanced between the left and right side of the body and postural imbalances create a system of weakness and tightness throughout the body’s chain of stability and movement. Some of these imbalances arise from poor movement habits, but more often than not are likely to come from stationary sitting and lying habits. So if we take someone (whether or not they are fit or unfit) with dysfunctional movement patterns and then put them into a high intensity, high impact workout it’s asking for trouble.
Now, throw someone with those two issues into a workout and its a recipe for disaster. This is because stressed people do not recover and heal properly. Their natural anti-inflammatory system is dysfunctional. So, if this type of person gets injured, they may stay injured for a long time and have ongoing niggles.
This is why it’s important that you move through basic exercises and build up your fitness slowly, and adjust the exercises and intensity to suit you as an INDIVIDUAL. It is also extremely important that you only do what you can each day based on how your energy levels. Some days are better than others for various reasons including how well you slept the night before, how healthy your eating is, general busyness and pressure.

Pillar 3. Deep Restful Sleep.
Sleeping is under coached in the gym/training industry. We all know that sleeping 8 hours per night is a must….but what if someone is not sleeping well because they are stressed? A lack of sleep puts your body into a state of stress (survival mode) and therefore holds onto bodyfat.
Deep restful sleep is your biggest weapon against unwanted fat. When you sleep well, your muscles will actually utilise fat as energy, you’ll grow muscle and recover from exercise better and have better moods.
On the other hand, poor sleep can disrupt your natural daily cortisol slope (put your sleep cycle out of whack), and this means that your body may elevate blood sugar at night which can lead to fat gain, vivid dreams and a night where you toss and turn.
So how do you shut cortisol off at night completely in order to get a deep sleep? Answer: Eat carbs at night.
Yes, I know: You were told that eating carbs after a certain time of the day would cause you to gain fat. But this is not true unless you are eating far too much in the first place or the wrong type of carbs.
